TPC Scottsdale announces the re-opening of the Stadium Course, host of the PGA TOUR’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014. The City of Scottsdale began the extensive renovation on April 1, 2014 with a goal of modernizing both the clubhouse and golf course, ensuring its future as host of a PGA TOUR event and as a world-class golf resort.
Original course architect, Tom Weiskopf, and his design team partnered with Landscapes Unlimited to manage the golf course project. “The time had come to update the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale to provide a more modern and state-of-art tournament course for today’s TOUR players. These changes will also position the Club to continue as the leader in the competitive Scottsdale resort and daily fee market,” said Weiskopf. “The golf course and clubhouse improvements will provide a long-term asset to the City of Scottsdale, while enhancing the venue for the world’s largest attended golf event, the Waste Management Phoenix Open.”
The course renovation has included resurfacing all greens; relocation of select greens, tees, and bunkers; reshaping of bunkers and tee complexes; new cart paths; desert landscaping enhancements and a new irrigation system. The redesign resulted in strategic changes on all 18 holes. Easily recognizable changes are new green locations on holes 2, 3, 4 and 14 and significant fairway and green complex modifications on No. 13. The renovated bunkers will feature white sand, which will add a dramatic new look to the course. More than 250 trees have been planted for both strategic and aesthetic value.
The clubhouse renovation, under the direction of the architectural firm, Allen & Philp, and general contractor, Wespac Construction, Inc., includes additional locker room and meeting space, and interior upgrades to the entire facility.
“We are extremely pleased with the upgrades to the golf course and clubhouse,” said Charlie Zink, Co-Chief Operating Officer of the PGA TOUR. “The work that has been done significantly elevates TPC Scottsdale’s capacity to host the Waste Management Phoenix Open and challenge the best players in the world, while serving as a premier golf destination throughout the year.”
Situated in the Sonoran Desert surrounded by the majestic McDowell Mountains, TPC Scottsdale is a resort/daily fee property offering 36 holes of championship golf, including the Stadium Course and its sister, the Champions Course. TPC Scottsdale and the Stadium Course opened in December 1986. The renowned design team of Weiskopf and Jay Morrish were directed by then PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman to create a similar Stadium design like that at TPC Sawgrass – allowing unobstructed views of the tournament. Today, two championship layouts can be played at the Club, which hosts more than 500,000 fans annually for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, making it one of the TOUR’s most anticipated events every year.
