Ireland’s Shane Lowry birdied his final two holes for a 2-under-par, 70, on Friday to join Great Dane Thomas Bjorn at the top of the golf leaderboard after 36 holes of the 2014 BMW PGA Championship at The Wentworth Club, London.

Lowry, who carded a double bogey on the ninth hole, surged up the leaderboard after carding four birdies on his inward nine to co-lead with Bjorn, who carded a 72 on a day. The leading duo finished four strokes ahead of the field with 10-under-par totals of 134.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello (73) of Spain and former BMW PGA Champion Luke Donald (67) of England finished tied third on -6, 138.

Former World Golf number one Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland was another stroke adrift on -5, 139, alongside Swedish pair Jonas Blixt and Henrik Stenson after all three posted scores of -1, 71.

Defending champion Matteo Manassero from Italy failed to qualify for the weekend and final thirty six holes, after finishing on a total score of +7, 151, after posting rounds of +8, 80 and -1, 71.
