HOTEL FITNESS CHAMP UPDATE – The reports on Bud Cauley‘s recovery from Sept. 12th surgery for a torn labrum of the left shoulder are encouraging. The Jacksonville, Fla. resident is rehabbing on a daily basis after having his arm in a sling for six weeks. His goals are to begin making full swings in February and return to the PGA TOUR at the Puerto Rico Open in March. The former U. of Alabama star finished 143rd in the FedExCup in 2013-14. He regained his TOUR status thanks to a victory in the opening Web.com Tour Finals event in late August, the Hotel Fitness Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
REFLECTING ON THE WEB.COM TOUR EXPERIENCE – 2014 Web.com Tour standoutJustin Thomas reflected on his year on Tour in a recent Golfweek feature (Oct. 24th): “It gave me a year to get used to the professional-tour lifestyle. It taught me what to do throughout the year. I’m really happy with what happened. It was a year of learning experiences for me.”
Q-SCHOOL COUNT, 1,170 PARTICIPANTS – The 2014 Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, which recently completed the first of three stages (in addition to a pre-qualifying stage), received a total of 1,170 applicants. Next month’s Second Stage will have six sites, with 469 contestants – five featuring 78 players each and one with 79 (final figures are subject to change).
MISSISSIPPI CONNECTIONS – This week’s Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA TOUR features two 2014 Web.com Tour graduates who have close ties to Mississippi. Jonathan Randolph is a native of Brandon and grew up playing at the host venue, the Country Club of Jackson. He is one of only two first-team All-American golfers (Cary Middlecoff/1939) in Ole Miss history (2010). Carlos Sainz, Jr. is a 2010 graduate of Mississippi State University and finished runner-up in the SEC Championship as a senior. Randolph has played in the last four tournaments in Jackson (2010-13), with improved results every year (MC, T64, T21 and T14 in 2013). Sainz will be making his first start in the event.
DANE GETS PGA TOUR INVITE – Sebastian Cappelen, who Monday qualified at the Air Capital Classic and went on to win the tournament in June, has received a sponsor exemption to compete in this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship. Cappelen, the first player from Denmark to win on the Web.com Tour, is the University of Arkansas’s first four-time All-American golfer (2010-14). He will be fully exempt on the Web.com Tour in 2015, having finished the season 26th on the Regular Season money list.
NEW TD FOR STONEBRAE CLASSIC – Trish Gregovich has been named Tournament Director of the Web.com Tour’s San Francisco Bay area tournament, the Stonebrae Classic. Gregovich served as sales manager of the 2014 event, held at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward. The 2015 tournament dates are July 16-19.
