In-form German golfer, Marcel Siem, (Pictured by Getty Images) may have been greatly inspired by the fantastic recent golfing achievements of major champions and fellow-countrymen, Bernhard Langer and Martin Kaymer.
The recent fine form of Siem has been perhaps under the radar when you consider the hype surrounding Kaymer winning the 2014 US Open Championship at Pinehurst and Langer recording victory at the 2014 US Seniors PGA Championship. He has cetainly continued where he left off in previous European Tour events and has made intentions of trying to win the 2014 Open de France at Le National known very early on day one in the French capital.
The German golfer birdied the 1st hole at Le National but immediately surrendered the gained shot at the second hole. Siem hit back with a sub par figure at the 3rd hole and parred the next two holes. The six foot three and half inches tall golfer’s round caught fire with three consecutive birdies at holes 6 through to 8, and he parred the 9th hole to reach the turn in -4, 32.
On the way in, the 33 year-old parred the 10th and 11th holes, and then moved to six under par with sub par figures at the 12th and 13th holes. The German sandwiched a birdie at the 16th hole in amongst pars at holes 14, 15 and 17. His round was overshadowed by a dropped shot at the final round as he posted the clubhouse lead on -6, 65, with an inward half of -2, 33.
Out on the course, Scotland’s Stephen Gallagher through 17 holes and Swede Kristoffer Bronberg after 14 holes were on six under par and threatening to take over the clubhouse lead.
Another Ryder Cup team pick candidate, Jamie Donaldson from Wales, was on four under par after 15 holes. Also on the -3 were Roope Kakko (68) from Finland, and Italy’s Matteo Manassero after seventeen holes.
Scotland’s Craig Lee was on two under par after 16 holes. Also on the two under par mark were England’s Paul Waring after 17 holes and Wade Ormsby from Australia.
