With the 2014 Web.com Tour season having concluded on Sept. 21st, the fall focus turns to the performance of 2014 graduates on the PGA TOUR and the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, which wraps up First Stage play this week.
BEN MARTIN / NO. 392 – Congratulations to 2013 Web.com Tour graduate Ben Martin on his first PGA TOUR win on Sunday at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Chalk it up as alumni win No. 392 on the PGA TOUR. The win came in the South Carolinian’s 56th PGA TOUR start.
FAST START – Tony Finau’s PGA TOUR career is off to a solid start. The Utahn has recorded T12 (Frys.com Open) and T7 (Shriners Hospitals for Children Open) finishes. He is 10th in the FedExCup and has earnings of $310,833, tops among last month’s Web.com graduates.
FOURTH-ROUND FLOURISHES – Nice final rounds at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas were turned in by 2014 Web.com Tour season-long leading money winner Adam Hadwin (63) and Player of the Year Carlos Ortiz (65), resulting in T10 and T18 finishes, respectively, for the first-time PGA TOUR members. Look for more highlights from the class of 2014 at this week’s McGladrey Classic, where all 24 first-time members are in the field.
MEDALISTS – Three Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament First Stage events were held last week. The medalists were Canada’s Wilson Bateman (at The Breakers, West Palm Beach, Fla.), Will McCurdy of Auburn, Ala. (at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Ga.) and John Ellis of San Jose, Calif. (at Dayton Valley Golf Club, Dayton, Nev.).
FIRST STAGE CONCLUDES THIS WEEK – The last four of 13 scheduled First Stage qualifiers will be held this Tuesday through Friday (Oct. 21-24) in Stevinson, Calif., Pinehurst, N.C., St. Augustine, Fla. and Beaumont, Calif. Second Stage qualifiers take place at six sites Nov. 11-14 and Nov. 18-21 in California (1), Florida (3) and Texas (2). The Final Stage is Dec. 11-16 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION – Jarrod Lyle picked up his second consecutive PGA TOUR check in Las Vegas. After opening with a 66, the Aussie, who is on the comeback trail after battling myeloid leukemia for a second time, finished T42. He has earned $53,795 in his two 2014-15 TOUR starts. He needs $283,825 and has 18 more starts to extend his medical exemption. Lyle competed in four Web.com Tour events this summer in advance of his return to the PGA TOUR.
