Jim Hunt named 2014 PGA TOUR Volunteer of the Year for service to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial; Hunt has served Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial for 42 years
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The PGA TOUR has named Jim Hunt of Fort Worth the 2014 PGA TOUR Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his dedication to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, where he has volunteered for 42 years and most recently served as the event’s Caddie Chairman.
Hunt was chosen the 2014 Volunteer of the Year from the many thousands of volunteers who support the PGA TOUR each year. The selfless commitment of volunteers enables tournaments to generate millions of dollars for their respective charities, while at the same time providing a fun and memorable experience for fans.
“For the PGA TOUR to recognize Jim and his longevity and dedication to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial is very special,” said Bobby Patton, Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial tournament chairman. “We commend him on an honor that is well deserved.”
The former fullback at Texas Christian University has been a staple in the Fort Worth area for many decades, not only volunteering for more than four decades at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, but also providing his services to other local endeavors, including the highly successful Fort Worth Airshow.
Hunt began his tournament service on the Pro-Am Committee in 1973, but after the late Bruce Edwards (caddie for Tom Watson) recommended the tournament improve its caddie experience, he moved to his current role as the Caddie Chairman in 1978. During his tenure, he is credited for multiple improvements for caddies at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, including the creation of an annual Caddie Fish Fry, creating the highly popular Caddie Oasis, providing valet parking for caddies during tournament week, and recruiting individuals from local universities and high school golf teams to serve as caddies during the Invitational’s Monday, Wednesday and secondary Pro-Am events.
“It is hard to put into words what this honor means to me,” said Hunt. “Fort Worth and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial are both near and dear to my heart and I’ve just tried to do my part to make both as good as they can possible be. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with – or a better cause to work for – than what we have at our event.”
In recognition of Hunt’s service and contributions to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, the PGA TOUR will donate $5,000 to the charity of his choice.
The 2015 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, won this year by Adam Scott, will be held May 21-24 at Colonial Country Club.
