Golf Awards Offer Fans the Chance to Celebrate Scotland’s Historic Year

Golf fans are being offered the chance to join stars from across the Scottish game to celebrate an historic and memorable year, one which witnessed success at all levels and was capped by a triumphant European victory at The Ryder Cup.

The 2015 Scottish Golf Awards is to move to the capital for the first time, being staged on Friday 20 March at the impressive Corn Exchange venue in Edinburgh, for a glittering occasion which will look back on many achievements over the past 12 months.

There have been numerous highlights for Scots at both Tour professional and amateur level in 2014 and the prestigious Player of the Year Award, won earlier this year by Catriona Matthew, will be hotly contested.

A shortlist of 10 has been drawn up with golf fans encouraged to vote for their winner via a poll on the SGU website and be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to the awards night.

Stephen Gallacher fulfilled his lifetime dream of playing in The Ryder Cup, on home soil at Gleneagles, thus putting the icing on a superb season which also saw him defend his Omega Dubai Desert Classic crown and secure seven top-10 finishes.

Scotland’s star performer on the Ladies European Tour was Kylie Walker, who chalked up two impressive play-off victories at the Deloitte Ladies Open and the German Open, as she eyes a place in Europe’s 2015 Solheim Cup team.

Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil became the first Scot in 10 years to win The Amateur Championship during a notable summer for Scotland’s male amateurs, which also saw Grant Forrest clinch the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy.

Colin Montgomerie, recipient of the Scottish Golf Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, also enjoyed a remarkable purple patch in the Senior ‘Majors’, winning both the US Senior PGA Championship and the US Senior Open, before Marc Warren moved back into the winners’ circle with a third European Tour title in Denmark

Rising stars Ewen Ferguson and Connie Jaffrey continued to make their mark domestically, with Ferguson securing a notable Scottish Boys match play and stroke play double, while Jaffrey notched her own impressive double in lifting the SLGA’s Girls and Ladies’ Order of Merit titles

Hosted by Sky Sports broadcaster Caroline Henderson, other awards to be presented on the night include the RBS Junior Club and Volunteer of the Year Awards, which recognise the efforts of those at the grassroots level who do so much to support golf in their local communities, with finalist nominees from both categories earning invites to attend.

This year’s event raised more than £40,000 for the game’s good causes through the Scottish Golf Charity, staged before a sell-out crowd of 650 guests, and joint organisers the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association are aiming to repeat that success in 2015.

Tickets are now on sale, with a table of 10 costing £925, with individual tickets priced at £95 per person (including VAT). The package includes a champagne reception, 3-course meal with wine, live music and some fantastic prizes to be won in the charity auction and raffle. Guests can also have their picture taken with some of golf’s most iconic trophies.

Back in the spring, Bernard Gallacher OBE was honoured with a Scottish Golf Lifetime Achievement Award as he enjoyed a night to remember in the company of fellow former Ryder Cup players Sandy Lyle and Andrew Coltart and stars from across the sporting spectrum, including ex-Old Firm managers Neil Lennon and Walter Smith and the Olympic silver-medal winning Men’s Team GB Curlers.

“It was a delight to receive my Lifetime award in front of Scotland’s golf fans and several members of my family,” said Gallacher. “I’m also privileged to follow in the footsteps of past winners of the award, Sandy Lyle, Sam Torrance, Paul Lawrie and Colin Montgomerie.

“I’m sure next year’s Scottish Golf Awards will be another fantastic night on the back of an historic Ryder Cup year.”
